Our Covert Investigations Training Course provides professionals with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to manage and conduct covert operations lawfully and effectively. Covering both RIPA-governed and non-RIPA investigations, this course is designed for managers, investigators, and practitioners who may be required to authorise, deploy, or present covert evidence in court.

 

Delegates will explore the legal, ethical, and operational responsibilities of covert activity, including surveillance and HUMINT deployments, risk management, and evidence integrity. With a strong focus on moral decision-making, original notes, policy books, disclosure, and courtroom procedures, this training ensures compliance with legislation while preparing staff for real-world investigative challenges.

By the end of this course, delegates will be able to:

 

• Understand the roles and responsibilities of investigators, managers, and authorising officers in covert operations.

• Apply moral, ethical, and legal decision-making principles to covert investigations.

• Conduct effective risk assessments and implement measures to protect staff, subjects, and organisational integrity.

• Plan and deliver tasking and deployments, including surveillance and HUMINT operations.

• Maintain evidence integrity through accurate contemporaneous original notes and professional use of policy books.

• Recognise and fulfil disclosure obligations (CPIA 1996) in relation to covert material.

• Prepare and present covert evidence for court proceedings, with awareness of cross-examination and courtroom etiquette.

• Differentiate between RIPA and non-RIPA governed activity and ensure compliance with oversight requirements.
